At present my work is committed to armchair travel - derived from secondary sources sometimes even third and forth hand.

These images are stand ins for a journey never taken; they are factually unreliable, and from unknown territories; these shadowy likeness are based on hear say, someone else’s tales someone else’s research. They are a questioning of what is meant or understood as real in the same terms as Franz Kafka’s novel Amerika. He looked to tourist and travel guides for information and in turn I look to these things and Amerika to inform me.

In earlier work I have dealt repeatedly with the contradictory sensations induced by constructions within landscape. On one hand the bigger and more brutally present something is the greater the sense of unreality it can induce in the observer, thus the less real and more fictional the experience becomes. Different approaches to this anomaly have led to multi canvas assemblage paintings of bridges, forts and motels exhibited stacked on the gallery floor or floating in a pool. Or massive military installations rendered as naïve concrete architectural models placed in sandpits; or expansive geological features in plasticine poised for action, ready under lights.

Present work takes this a further step where I use only second hand material and unsubstantiated evidence of a place. Asserting armchair experience and third hand information, which is in finding, at least as much practical use as first hand experience as well as accurate data in understanding any contemporary reality.

Surveillance views of no go hazardous places.
The sometimes-intense secrecy surrounding these places and lack of information
breeds rumors and conspiracy theories as to what lies behind their parameter fences.
Wendy Judge. Is concerned with the anomalous within the landscape, both in structures on the land and also within the land it’s self.

These landscapes are recreated through models. It is not only the representations
and the approximations that interest her but the dynamic between the actual and the imagination,
the relationships at play and what that may trigger.
This work is driven by connecting threads, associations and coincidences found through cultural
references such as literature, historical painting, popular culture, science and film.
This process of cross-pollinating propels odd dialogues and private conversations
Turning the cogs to the mechanisms of culture, power and politics.
